With an indisputable legacy of innovation and world-firsts, Bulova has been an industry-leading brand across the globe for over 135 years. From being worn by Charles A. Lindbergh, the first man to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean, through creating the world’s first electronic watch, to being responsible for providing the Accutron technology used for the timing systems on Apollo 11, Bulova has been a constant pioneer in the field of horology throughout the industrial age, the space age, and remains at the forefront of progress in the information age.
History of Bulova Accutron Watches
Established by Joseph Bulova - a young immigrant from Bohemia (now the Czech Republic) - the J.Bulova store opened on Maiden Lane, Lower Manhattan right in the heart of New York’s burgeoning jewellery industry in 1875. The Bulova name quickly established itself as being synonymous with supreme quality and innovation in horological technique and artistry.
By 1912, Bulova had established the world’s first dedicated mass-production watch factory in Bienne, Switzerland, allowing a move closer to a standardised assembly previously unseen in the world of horology. Soon afterwards, the Bulova Observatory was constructed atop a skyscraper in Midtown Manhattan with the express intention of providing expert mathematicians with electronic readings which they were able to record on a chronograph, set within the building. This information was then used by the Setting and Timing units to set the time on all Bulova timepieces in the most accurate way possible.
The world-firsts and dedication to advancement didn’t stop here. Embracing new technologies, Bulova embarked upon devoting their abundant creativity on marketing and advertising – breaking new ground by broadcasting America’s first national radio commercial in 1926, and the world’s first-ever television advert in 1941 – at the cost of a whole US $9! The famous slogan, ‘America Runs on Bulova Time’ remains in use to this day, reflecting the firmly-rooted core qualities of the Bulova brand and its commitment to unprecedented quality and progression.
Perhaps Bulova’s most exciting and notable achievement is its involvement with the development of its Accutron technology for a variety of timing instruments to be used on satellites at the specific request of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA); a journey which began early in the space race with the Vanguard I satellite in 1958 and included the landmark Apollo 11 moon landings on July 21, 1969 - quite literally out-of-this-world technology.
Still built upon the foundation of quality which defined the Bulova brand at its’ inception over a century ago, the exceptional design and unfathomable accuracy capabilities of within ten seconds a year being achieved by a modern Bulova watch, the distinguished legacy and prestige of the brand is upheld to this day.
