History of Ingersoll Watches
Ingersoll since 1892. In the last years of the 19th Century, Robert and Charles Ingersoll founded one of the first American watch factories. The Ingersoll brothers developed new technologies to produce pocket watches and wrist watches. The success of the “Dollar Watch” also called the “Yankee” was amazing. The Ingersoll brothers had to increase production and open new plants to keep up with the demand.
In 1928, Pilot Sir Alan Cobham used an Ingersoll watch during his flight over the continent of Africa to ensure that he knew the exact time. On May 22nd 1933, an application for a US patent was submitted and the first Ingersoll Mickey Mouse watches went into production. It was a success and by June 1935 more than 2.5 million watches had been sold. The Mickey Mouse success was unprecedented and by 1957, the 25millionth watch was personally presented to Walt Disney himself. In 1971 after 38 happy years the great partnership was over.
It has been suggested that Ingersoll’s Radiolite (the “Night Design” with luminous dial) wristwatch may have been issued to British tank crews during the First World War instead of their Ingersoll pocket watches.
Thomas Edison, Teddy Roosevelt and James Dean are amongst some of the famous names to have owned an Ingersoll watch.
Today, Ingersoll has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a company launched by two brothers from a Michigan Farm to become a brand that has generated global recognition.
